Who are the Maasai?

The Maasai people are an indigenous ethnic group living in Kenya and Tanzania. The name “Masai Mara” comes from the famous Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, named after the Maasai people.

The Maasai are known for their semi-nomadic lifestyle, rich cultural traditions, and striking red clothing. They originally migrated from South Sudan in the 17th and 18th centuries and settled in the savannahs of East Africa, where they continue to herd cattle.

Despite modern pressures to adopt a more settled way of life, many Maasai still maintain their traditional customs and live in harmony with nature, especially around conservation areas like the Masai Mara. If you wish to enjoy a traditional Masai Mara safari experience, we can help. Contact us today to learn more and let us curate a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience in Africa.

How can I experience Maasai culture during my safari?

A visit to Masai Mara offers an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the Maasai people. The Maasai, known for their vibrant red attire, beadwork, and warrior spirit, have lived in harmony with the land and its wildlife for centuries. When you book with us, we can arrange guided cultural visits to Maasai villages, where you can learn about their customs, traditional dances, and way of life.
